At Ground Level
Under the garage door — the most common entry point in rural Ohio, and the easiest to fix
Worn or missing door sweeps on side and back doors
The gap where the bottom course of siding meets the foundation
Unscreened crawlspace and foundation vents
Vents screened with plastic mesh — a rodent chews through it in an afternoon
Where the deck ledger board meets the house
Anything Cut By Hand
Water line penetrations
Gas line penetrations
Electrical service entries
AC line sets — often the largest gap on the whole house
Dryer vents with a broken or missing exterior cover
Bath and stove vents without proper covers
Up High
Soffit and fascia gaps, especially where an addition meets original construction
Roof-line penetrations and plumbing stack boots
Gable and attic vents
Chimney openings without a cap
Where a porch roof ties into the wall

One in four Ohio homes was built before 1950, and in older village and city cores it runs closer to three in five. That construction — stone foundations, balloon framing, hand-cut pipe penetrations — is why exclusion matters more here than in a 1990s subdivision.

In a pre-1950 house with balloon framing, a mouse that enters at the sill plate can reach the attic without ever crossing a living space. That's why "I only see them in the basement" isn't reassuring.
OSU Extension's number one recommendation for fall invaders — boxelder bugs, brown marmorated stink bugs, Asian lady beetles, western conifer seed bugs — is exclusion, not a spray. The same work solves both problems at once.
An honest note on poison
